Do you translate documents as well as speak?
Yes. On-site interpreting is the day rate; written translation, contracts, spec sheets, supplier correspondence, is quoted per 1,000 Chinese characters, since length, not hours, is the real measure there.
Can you cover factory visits outside the meeting room?
That's most of the work. I interpret with factory managers and line staff, read the Chinese-only documentation, and tell you when production isn't matching your spec, on the floor, not after the order ships.
What's the difference between interpreting and a business-assistant day?
Interpreting is the language in the room. A business-assistant or sourcing day, from $250, adds the legwork around it, supplier shortlists, inspections, logistics, when you need someone running the trip, not just translating it.
What does hiring a Chinese translator cost?
On-site interpreting is published below at $80–$140 a half-day and $99–$250 a full day; document translation is quoted per 1,000 Chinese characters, since length not hours is the real measure there; business-assistant and sourcing days start at $250. Every job is costed in writing before you commit.
Do you interpret simultaneously, or consecutively?
Both, and the right one depends on the room. Consecutive, where I speak after each party, suits negotiations, factory visits and most meetings, which is the bulk of business work. Simultaneous, from a booth in real time, suits conferences and panels; for those I bring in a vetted colleague so there are two of us, since simultaneous is a two-person job.
Is what I discuss kept confidential?
Yes. Pricing, designs and supplier terms are commercially sensitive, and I treat them that way: what's said in your meetings and written in your documents stays between us. I'm not relaying your numbers to the other side of the table or to anyone else.
