Pingyao is a UNESCO World Heritage walled city in central Shanxi, and its trade is built on craft and heritage, not mass production. There's real history under it: Pingyao was the birthplace of China's piaohao draft banks in the nineteenth century, the country's first network of remittance houses, which is why the intact old city draws finance, film and culture work as much as tourism. The craft signature is Pingyao tuiguang lacquerware, the hand-polished, gold-traced pieces made in workshops in and around the walls, alongside Shanxi specialty goods that travel well: aged Shanxi vinegar and Pingyao beef.
Heavy industry and volume manufacturing sit elsewhere in the province around Taiyuan and Jinzhong, an easy day trip north.
