On the ground in Harbin

An English-Chinese interpreter and translator in Harbin.

Harbin is China's gateway to Russia, and the trade here reflects it: cross-border import-export, food and grain processing, machinery, and cold-climate and winter goods. The China-Russia Expo and the long-running Harbin International Economic and Trade Fair bring buyers and suppliers from both sides of the border, and English thins out fast once you leave the fair hall.

The factory and processing capacity sits out in the Pingfang district and the Harbin New Area across the Songhua River. Deals get done in Mandarin, often with a Russian-trade overlay, and that's where an interpreter who knows the Northeast earns the fee.

YOUR TRIP
FAQ

Harbin interpreter, your questions.

Do you cover the China-Russia Expo and the Harbin Trade Fair?
Yes, these fairs are the reason most buyers come to Harbin. Send me your target sectors and exhibitor list ahead of time and I'll line up the meetings that are worth your hours on the floor.
Can you help with food, grain and machinery suppliers?
Those are Harbin's core exports. I interpret spec, quantity, lead-time and certification talk without slowing the meeting down, and I write it all up the same evening.
Is winter a problem for factory visits?
Harbin winters are real, but the work runs year-round. I plan the route around the weather so we still cover the suppliers and processing sites you came for.
What does a day's trade-fair or supplier work cost?
The rates are published above: $80–$140 half-day, $99–$250 a full day on the fair floor or at suppliers, $800–$1,250 a week. Travel out to the Pingfang district and the New Area is included, and you get a written summary each evening.
Do you take commission from suppliers or Russia-trade brokers?
No. My fee is yours, so I can warn you when a cross-border supplier is a broker stacking a margin, or a food processor's certification doesn't hold up. That candour is what an independent interpreter is for. More on sourcing.
Is it just you, and what if you're booked?
For a normal Harbin job you get me. For a large fair delegation I bring in vetted interpreters. If your dates are taken, especially Expo and Ice Festival weeks, I'll tell you fast and recommend someone I trust.
