Sanya is Hainan's resort capital, and its business reflects that. The modern engine is the Hainan Free Trade Port, the national policy experiment turning the island into a low-tax, duty-free zone, and you feel it most at the Haitang Bay duty-free complex, one of the largest in the world and the reason much of the retail and distribution business here exists. Around that sit hospitality and resort development, real estate, a growing yachting industry, and tropical agriculture: mango, coconut, fishery and other tropical-crop trade.
Hainan is also a serious conference province; the Boao Forum for Asia convenes up the coast, and MICE travel keeps the calendar full. It is genuinely lighter on manufacturing than the Pearl River Delta cities to the north, so most foreign visitors are conference delegates, investors, hospitality partners or buyers working the duty-free and FTP angle, and that is exactly where an interpreter earns their keep.
