On the ground in Yiwu

An English-Chinese interpreter and translator in Yiwu.

Yiwu is the Yiwu International Trade City, the Futian Market, the largest small-commodities wholesale market on earth: five connected districts, tens of thousands of booths, organised by product so District 1 runs to toys and artificial flowers, District 2 to luggage and hardware, and on through jewellery, stationery and festive goods. It is daily-use goods sourced by the carton, the container or the catalogue.

A walk-up in English gets you the retail-tourist quote; the wholesale price, the MOQ and the mixed-container terms come in Mandarin once the booth owner knows you're a real buyer. I plan the route by district so we don't lose a day wandering, screen booths before you fly so we skip the middlemen, and carry the negotiation through to the agent's office where the order and the shipping actually get arranged. Dongyang and Jinhua factories are a short hop when you want to see the line behind the booth.

YOUR TRIP
FAQ

Yiwu interpreter, your questions.

How is the Futian Market organised, and how do we not waste a day in it?
By product. Each of the five districts and their floors is grouped by category: toys, hardware, jewellery, stationery, and so on. I map your buying list to the districts before you arrive so we hit the right booths in order instead of walking kilometres of corridor at random.
Can you get me the real wholesale price, not the tourist price?
That's the whole job. The number changes the moment the booth owner hears Mandarin and understands your order size. I negotiate MOQ, unit price and mixed-container terms directly, and tell you when a booth is a trader reselling rather than the actual supplier.
Can you arrange factory visits near Yiwu?
Yes. Dongyang and Jinhua factories are close, and many Futian booths trace back to lines there or elsewhere in Zhejiang. If you want to verify the supplier behind a booth, I'll set up and interpret the factory visit.
What does a day at the Futian Market cost?
The rates are published above: $80–$140 for a half-day, $99–$250 for a full day across the districts, $800–$1,250 for a week. Travel between the market districts and the agents' offices is included, along with a written summary of every booth and price each evening.
Do the booths or agents pay you a cut?
No. You're my only client, so I have no reason to steer you toward a booth that tips me. In a market this size that matters: I'll tell you when a supplier is really a trader reselling, and I negotiate your price, not a margin into someone else's pocket. More on sourcing.
Is it you working the market, or a hired guide?
Me. Not a student with a lanyard hired for the day. For a large buying group I can bring in vetted interpreters so nobody waits, but the Futian work itself is done by someone who knows which district holds what. Book early, fair weeks fill fast.
