On the ground in Shanghai

An English-Chinese interpreter and translator in Shanghai.

Shanghai is China's expo capital, and the calendar runs all year. The big two are the National Exhibition & Convention Center (NECC) out by Hongqiao, home to CIIE, the China International Import Expo, and the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) in Pudong, which cycles through machinery, packaging, electronics, furniture and textiles fair by fair.

A booth conversation in English gets you the brochure; the costing, MOQ and tooling lead time happen after, in Mandarin, usually at the supplier's office in Pudong or Qingpu. I work both ends of that, the hall floor and the follow-up meeting, so a fair week turns into signed terms instead of a stack of business cards.

YOUR TRIP
FAQ

Shanghai interpreter, your questions.

Can you cover both NECC and SNIEC during a fair week?
Yes. They sit on opposite sides of the city, NECC by Hongqiao and SNIEC in Pudong, so we plan the days around the hall map and your meeting list rather than backtracking across town. Send me the exhibitor list early and I'll route it.
Do you handle supplier office visits after the fair, not just the booth?
That's where the deal is actually done. The booth is the introduction; the price, payment terms and sample timeline get settled at the office. I cover both and write up what was agreed the same evening.
Can you join meetings in Suzhou or Hangzhou on the same trip?
Often, yes. Both are inside an hour by high-speed rail. Give me the addresses and I'll tell you whether it fits as a day trip or needs an overnight.
Can I hire you for translation in Shanghai as well as interpreting?
Yes. Book me by the day for on-site interpreting at NECC or SNIEC and supplier meetings, and for the written translation that follows: contracts, quotations and spec sheets, so nothing gets lost between the booth and the purchase order.
What does an interpreter cost for a Shanghai fair week?
The published rates are above: $80–$140 half-day, $99–$250 a full day across NECC or SNIEC, $800–$1,250 for the week. Travel across town between the two expo centres and the supplier offices is included, not billed on top.
Is it just you, or can you field a team for a big stand?
For most meetings you get me. For an exhibition that needs interpreters on several booths at once, I draw on a vetted network, as I did for a Malaysian organiser who needed three Chinese-English interpreters briefed fast. If I'm booked for your week I'll tell you straight away.
Do you earn anything from the suppliers?
No. My fee comes from you, so my read on a booth or an office quote isn't bent by a kickback. When a Pudong manufacturer turns out to be a middleman, you'll hear it from me rather than find out after the deposit.
